Some fun facts about this tune: it first existed as an Eastern Mediterranean folk song about an Egyptian woman, drawing heavily from Middle Eastern composition style. One of the first known recordings of it was by Greek artist Tetos Dimitriades in 1927. It resurged in popularity two decades later with Jan August's piano version. Since then it has gone on to influence styles such as Dick Dale's surf rock, Agent Orange's punk rock version, Quadro Nuevo's jazz symphony, the Black Eyed Peas' hit single Pump It, and probably many others. I find it fascinating how a song can capture the ear of listeners across the world for almost a century!
