There is a bit of an uproar this morning about the attire of the Michigan Governor during her "State of the State" address. People are outraged that others chose to comment on her dress rather than her address. Attacking trivial aspects of an opponent's case gains nothing for the attacker. We all want our politics to be debates about ideas, actions and their consequences. But we have to acknowledge that politics as practiced is a knife fight in a phone booth with partisans prepared to machine gun it from the outside if their candidate begins to lose. Those who enter that phone booth need to have a tough skin, it is the price of admission. So far the Governor of Michigan has demonstrated that toughness as well as the intelligence and wit to not let her tough skin become a barrier to other's concerns. Well done for her and I wish her well.
